SLC invites bids to sponsor teams in SLPL

Despite the BCCI not releasing Indian players, the SLC has gone ahead with inviting bids for the SLPL.The Sri Lanka Cricket Board invited bids to sponsor the seven teams in their Twenty20 premier league on Friday, amid continued refusal by their Indian counterparts to send their players which forced the postponement of the event last year.

The cash-strapped Sri Lanka Cricket Board are offering private individuals or corporate bodies the opportunity to be a part of the "world's newest and most exciting Twenty20 league," they said in a statement on Friday.

They plan to lease out all the teams for seven years for the SLPL tournament which begins in August. The bids are invited until June 25 and an individual or corporate body will be allowed to bid for three teams but win only one. Sri Lanka Cricket is facing heavy criticism for giving the little-known Singapore-based Somerset Entertainment Ventures, which the BCCI has accused of having links with former IPL head Lalit Modi, rights to organise the event for 15 years.

Indian media reported that the BCCI has once again 'rejected' Sri Lanka Cricket's appeal to release the Indian players but Sri Lanka Cricket says it has not received any official confirmation. "We sent invitations to all the full member countries asking them to release their players for the SLPL. Several have responded favourably but not India so far," Nishantha Ranatunga, Sri Lanka Cricket secretary, told Reuters. "Even if Indian players fail to turn up this time we will go ahead with the event," he said.

Angelo Mathews ruled out of Asia Cup

Angelo Matthews will fly back to Sri Lanka.Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the ongoing Asia Cup due to a calf injury. Mathews, who missed out on all the three finals of the recently concluded CB series in Australia, is yet to recover completely from the calf strain he sustained there.

Sri Lanka are already depleted without key players like Thisara Perera, and there are doubts about Lasith Malinga's fitness. Perera, like the other all-rounder Mathews, missed the CB series finals because of a back injury. Malinga played with a groin strain in the finals at Adelaide but was rested for Sri Lanka's first Asia Cup clash against India. It is still not known whether he will take field on Thursday to play against Pakistan, and skipper Mahela Jayawardene said that a decision will be taken on the day of the match. Sri Lanka's selectors have not named any replacement yet.

"The last couple of days Angelo has had some fitness tests, he hasn't pulled through those well, so we made a call to send him back home," Mahela Jayawardene said. "He will try to get ready for the Test matches (against England) that starts in about ten days' time. The selectors back home will decide and send a replacement for us. Malinga played through injury in the final two matches of the CB series, so we decided to give him a break yesterday. Yesterday he bowled a bit (in the nets), he will be bowling today as well, and after his bowling session we will take a call on him tomorrow."

Geoff Marsh is the new coach of Srilanka

Former Australian opener Geoff Marsh will take over as head coach of the Sri Lankan team on a two-year contract, the country's cricket board (SLC) said on Friday.

"With his vast coaching and playing experience at the highest levels, Sri Lanka Cricket is confident that he would be an ideal choice for the post of Sri Lanka national team head coach," the board said in a statement.

Marsh, who will begin his new job on Sept. 27, was part of Australia's 1987 World Cup-winning team and also coached them to the 1999 trophy.

The 52-year-old also served as a selector before taking charge of Zimbabwe, a post he quit in 2004.

Sri Lanka have been without a regular coach since Trevor Bayliss departed after guiding the team to the final of the 2011 World Cup in April.

Australian Stuart Law stepped in as interim coach for the tour of England while retired Sri Lanka bowler Rumesh Ratnayake coached the team during the home series against Australia.

Marsh, meanwhile mentioned that he will quit as coach of the IPL team Sahara Pune Warriors.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Marsh said: "I told Pune Warriors and they were very good about it. Coaching an international team takes a lot of time and being able to fit both of them in just wouldn't have happened," Marsh said.

"They're very comfortable with it. I enjoyed my year at Pune Warriors. They're a fantastic family. They could see that coaching an international team is an honour, so it was all good," added Marsh, who coached the Pune team in the IPL 2011.
