West Indies speedster Ravi Rampaul had a great start and a dream finish to his spell as the West Indies kept its hopes alive with a 16-run win in the third ODI at the Sardar Patel Stadium here on Monday.
Rampaul dismissed Indian skipper Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir off the first two balls of his spell at the beginning of the innings. He removed the off-colour Suresh Raina in his second spell before nailing the aggressive Abhimanyu Mithun to signal victory for his side.
Wickets fell in quick fashion at the start of the Indian innings and it took another special effort from the classy Rohit Sharma to help his team stay afloat.
Rohit, full of confidence after playing two match-winning knocks in the first two games, looked in terrific touch. He lofted debutant leg-spinner Sunil Narine — who was quite impressive — with effortless ease over the extra-cover boundary.
Rohit (95) was run out off a direct throw from West Indies skipper Darren Sammy, who had dropped the Indian batsman early on in his innings. Though Mithun struck a couple of meaty blows and Umesh Yadav provided him good support, ‘man of the match' Rampaul came back to wrap things up by dismissing the Karnataka speedster.
Earlier, a furious offensive by Sammy and Andre Russell propelled the West Indies to a competitive 260 for five, after the innings had failed to gain momentum in the initial and middle stages
Sammy (41, 17b, 5x4, 2x6) and Russell (40, 18b, 4x4, 2x6) came together at 181 for five in the 45th over — after the set batsmen Denesh Ramdin (38) and Kieron Pollard (29) had departed in successive overs — and wreaked havoc on India's pacemen with a partnership of 79 in 34 balls.
Severe on Mithun
Choosing to have a go at everything, the duo destroyed the length and full-toss offerings of the seamers as they returned for their final spells.
Sammy was especially severe on Abhimanyu Mithun, who replaced Varun Aaron, as he tore into him for 23 runs in the 49th over, including an unreal six over cover.
Not to be outdone, Russell made the last over, bowled by Yadav, count for 20, taking the tally from the last five to 73.
The sedate, almost blasé, start scarcely indicated the blizzard-like finish.
Virender Sehwag elected to field and Umesh (3-0-5-0) and Vinay Kumar (6-1-20-1) kept things in control.
Darren Bravo (26) added 55 in 12.5 overs for the third wicket with Marlon Samuels before retiring with a hamstring injury, further disadvantaging a team struggling with the bat and playing a batsman short, the ‘mystery' spinner Narine having replaced opener Adrian Barath.
Utilising Power Plays
Samuels (58, 93b, 5x4, 1x6) made the bowling PowerPlay (16-20) count with some dazzling boundaries off Umesh and reached his 22nd ODI 50 off 78 balls. It was finally left to Sammy and Russell to hammer the living daylights out of the Indian attack.
