Symonds quits all forms of cricket

Former Australia all-rounder, Andrew Symonds has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

"Effective immediately, I am retiring from all forms of professional cricket," Symonds said.

Symonds had been playing in various domestic T20 leagues around the world after having been dropped from the national squad.

He also made it clear that he would not be able to fulfill his obligations with the Mumbai Indians and that he would not take part in the upcoming edition of the IPL.

"It is with regret that I will not be able to fulfill my final year of the IPL with the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians and the IPL have both been very supportive of me, but the impending arrival of my first child is a priority." he added.

Symonds played 26 Tests, 198 ODIs and 14 T20Is for Australia. He was known for his destructive batting. He bowled a mixture of off breaks and medium fast bowling. This along with his electric fielding made him a genuine match-winner in the shorter formats. He played a significant part in the formidable Australian One day outfit that won two consecutive World Cups in 2003 and 2007.

He enjoyed a little success in the longer format but a series of controversies led to a loss of form and he subsequently lost his place. He was at the center stage in 2007 when India toured Australia. His allegations that Indian off spinner, Harbhajan Singh had abused him racially rocked the cricket world.

The two players however found themselves in the same team in the Indian Premier League when the Mumbai Indians bought Symonds for $850,000. He was a part of the Harbhajan led Mumbai side that won the Champion's league T20 in 2011. That final was also the last time he featured in any level of competitive cricket.
