Angelo Mathews ruled out of Asia Cup

Angelo Matthews will fly back to Sri Lanka.Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the ongoing Asia Cup due to a calf injury. Mathews, who missed out on all the three finals of the recently concluded CB series in Australia, is yet to recover completely from the calf strain he sustained there.

Sri Lanka are already depleted without key players like Thisara Perera, and there are doubts about Lasith Malinga's fitness. Perera, like the other all-rounder Mathews, missed the CB series finals because of a back injury. Malinga played with a groin strain in the finals at Adelaide but was rested for Sri Lanka's first Asia Cup clash against India. It is still not known whether he will take field on Thursday to play against Pakistan, and skipper Mahela Jayawardene said that a decision will be taken on the day of the match. Sri Lanka's selectors have not named any replacement yet.

"The last couple of days Angelo has had some fitness tests, he hasn't pulled through those well, so we made a call to send him back home," Mahela Jayawardene said. "He will try to get ready for the Test matches (against England) that starts in about ten days' time. The selectors back home will decide and send a replacement for us. Malinga played through injury in the final two matches of the CB series, so we decided to give him a break yesterday. Yesterday he bowled a bit (in the nets), he will be bowling today as well, and after his bowling session we will take a call on him tomorrow."
