CSK Vs NSW Match Report & Scorecard

Chennai, Oct 4: New South Wales Blues opener, David Warner, single-handedly knocked out Chennai Super Kings on a ground which was once called their fortress. While the low-scoring matches have been absolute thrillers in Nokia CLT20 2011, the high scoring ones have been pretty much one-sided affairs. This game was no exception. After Warner's unbeaten 135 took NSW to 201 for 2, the CSK challenge fizzled out just after the 11-over mark by which time the NSW bowlers had got rid of Michael Hussey, M Vijay, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni.
On a Chennai wicket, which has not seen too many high scores in this edition of the tournament, NSW Blues batted first and got off to a very good start with Warner and Shane Watson both hitting the ball well right from the first over. The two brought up NSW's 50 in the sixth over. Watson departed shortly afterwards as he scooped a simple catch to Dhoni off R Ashwin's bowling for 21 in the seventh over.
Warner continued to find the boundaries despite the field being spread out. Steven Smith, who replaced Watson, played a good supporting knock on the other end as the runs kept flowing. Smith holed out to Wriddhiman Saha in the deep in the 18th over after scoring 31 off 29 balls. Warner and Smith put on a 101-run partnership for the second wicket, the majority of the runs coming from the opener's bat. Warner raced away to his century with a single and cut loose once again amplifying the defending champion's agony. The burly Australian scored an unbeaten 135 off 69 balls as he hit eight sixes and 11 fours.
Hussey started off CSK's run chase on a bright note as he slashed a boundary off the inning's first ball from Stuart Clark. He went on to hit Clark for two more boundaries in that over as CSK posted 12 in the first over. More boundaries came in the next five overs as the Chennai team brought up its 50 in 6.1 overs. The same over Clark trapped Hussey leg before and then Vijay was castled by O'Keefe in the eighth.
Raina tried to force the issue and went after the bowlers but O'Keefe got the better of him in the 10th over and Dhoni departed cheaply in the very next over. With the top order gone, CSK were set to miss the qualifying target of scoring 202 in 17 overs. But things went from bad to worse and the CSK all-rounders and tail couldn't even bat out the full 20 overs. They bundled up for 155 in 18.5 overs. The title holders finished bottom of the table and crashed out of Nokia CLT20.
NSW, meanwhile, join Mumbai Indians in the semi-final line-up from this group.
Brief Scores: NSW Blues 201 for 2 in 20 overs (David Warner 135 n.o., Steven Smith 31) beat CSK 155 all out in 18.5 overs (Michael Hussey 37, Steve O'Keefe 3-22, Stuart Clark 2-34)
Man-of-the-Match: David Warner for his hard hitting innings of 135 that sealed a semi-final place for NSW Blues.
