Michael Clarke named Wisden Cricketer of the year

Australia skipper Michael Clarke has been awarded the Wisden Cricketer of the Year award for the year 2012. The right-handed batsman had an extremely successful campaign last year amassing 1595 runs at an average of 106.33. Clarke becomes the third Australian after Ricky Ponting (2003) and Shane Warne (2004) to be bestowed with the honour.

The Australian skipper said it was an hnour for him to receive the award.

"I feel very honoured to be named as Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World. Given the esteemed history and tradition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack it is a very humbling accolade and one that I hold in the highest regard," he said.

Wisden also named the list for the Five Cricketers of the Year - a list that reflects World No. side South Africa's dominance in the longest format of the game. As many as three Proteas players (Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn) have made the list. The other two in the list are Marlon Samuels (West Indies) and Nick Compton (England).

Clarke has been at the top of his game since India's tour Down Under where he smashed a triple hundred at the SCG and followed that up with a 200 in Adelaide.

His 2012-23 season has been peppered with stellar innings as well, including the back-to-back hundreds when South Africa visited Australia and the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka. He was also Australia's best batsman during their embarrassing 4-0 loss in India before a recurring back injury sidelined him from the 4th and final Test and the following Indian T20 League.
