Sehwag axed; Rasool, Chand included in CT probables squad

Could this spell the end for Sehwag's ODI career?Virender Sehwag was left out of the 30-man probables list for the Champions trophy announced today by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The selectors have included youngsters Unmukt Chand, Parvez Rasool and Ishwar Pandey in the side.

Surprisingly, Cheteshwar Pujara, who was in the Indian ODI side for the series against England, was not even named in the probables list. Besides Sehwag and Pujara, the other notable absentees include Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan.

The axing could spell the end for Sehwag's ODI career. He was left out of the side for the home series against England and with his form and luck failing, the selectors have been forced to look elsewhere. His Delhi-partner Gautam Gambhir was however given a longer rope and was included in the 30-man long list.

For fellow-absentees, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan, both the wrong side of thirty, too it seems like the end of the road with respect to the ODI careers with the selectors preferring to focus on youth. Zaheer has played 200 ODIs for India with the last being against Sri Lanka in August, last year while Harbhajan's last ODI cap was during the tour to West Indies in June 2011.

The selection committee headed by Sandeep Patil, however, opted for youth by including Under-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand and Kashmir all-rounder Parvez Rassol. Ambati Rayudu was also included in the list alongside on-and-off India players Irfan Pathan, R Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Dinesh Karthik.

Backed by strong domestic performances, the likes of Kedhar Jadhav, Wriddhaman Saha, Amit Mishra, Jalaj Saxena, IC Pandey and Sidharth Kaul have been included in the list as well.

The final 15 for the tournament, which is to be held between 6th and 23rd June later this year in England, will be announced later.

This will be the last edition of the Champions Trophy as the International Cricket Council ICC has decided to scrap the tournament after this and instead promote the Test championship. India are in Group B alongside Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies.

India's first match is against South Africa on June 6. They take on West Indies on June 11 and Pakistan on June 15.
