india squad unchanged for second test;what is harbhajan singh's future
The Indian selection panel, led by Kris Srikkanth, decided to name an unchanged squad for the second Test against West Indies. This meant that Harbhajan Singh was once again ignored while leg-spinner Rahul Sharma got the nod.
India won the first Test in New Delhi by five wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, their last Test outing before next month's high-profile tour of Australia.
The hosts won with a day to spare after debutant off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who replaced the out-of-favour Harbhajan Singh, picked up nine wickets and was named the man of the match.
Ashwin's match figures of 9-128 were the second-best by an Indian debutant behind leg-spinner and current selector Narendra Hirwani's 16-136 against the West Indies at Chennai in 1988. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha too was a success, claiming seven wickets, six of them coming in the first innings.
The fine performance by the two effectively shut the door on Harbhajan, who hasn't done anything noteworthy in the Ranji Trophy as well.
Harbhajan was left out of the Indian squad for the ODI series against England last month before being dropped from the Test team for the first two matches against West Indies.
Ashwin, who will get married in Chennai on November 13, has been picked for the Test starting a day after his wedding. The second Test will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata from 14 November. The squad for the final match in Mumbai from November 22 will be picked later.
Squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Umesh Yadav, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Sharma, Varun Aaron
